Yellow Room

At the moment I am painting two types of paintings. The first type is on a canvas. It is a 2 dimensional image. Your eyes move around within the image and you ignore the rest of the world around it. The other type of painting aims to cover as much of the environment as possible so that there are no other things around it to be ignored. You are in the painting. I like to think of the second type of painting in terms of the first; imagining that you are a little square of colour in the first type of painting looking at all the other little areas of colour around you.

Sam Songailo’s practice is based in painting and includes large scale installations and video. He was the recipient of the Eran Svigos Award for best Visual Art (Adelaide Fringe 2012) and the Adelaide Critics’ Circle Emerging Visual Artist Award (2010). Sam holds a Bachelor of Visual Communication (Graphic Design) from the University of South Australia. He has exhibited extensively in alternative gallery spaces in Adelaide and now bases his practice in Melbourne.
