“West Space's Video Series”

West Space has long desired to create short films that build on the content of our artistic program – this has important outreach and educational ramifications for us. In 2011 an emerging filmmaker, Johann Rashid, started working with West Space to develop a series of short films that document exhibitions in our artistic program. We are enormously proud of this initiative, and believe that Johann has done a fantastic job.

Each video portrait comprises a ‘to camera’ interview with the artist/curator that is overlaid across a series of shots of their exhibition. The films are designed to be straightforward, frank and engaging portraits of each artist and their exhibition. We understand that sometimes the content of West Space’s artistic program is hard to understand for those unfamiliar with contemporary art. The films enable a friendly and valuable insight into the ‘why and how’ of the artist’s process, making the program at West Space more accessible to a broad audience. The series is not intended to be a comprehensive archive of the West Space artistic program – we cannot realistically create films for all projects and, furthermore, some artists decline our invitation to participate in this project.

Johann has completed ten films thus far, which can be viewed below or accessed via individual project pages on our website.
