In museum displays, anatomical illustrations, films and TV, the internal human body is represented as a kind of wonderland, where beauty, horror and awe are intimately connected, creating an intensely theatrical experience for the viewer. Accident scenes, crime scene photographs and images of disease and deformity carry an irresistible yet disquieting allure. My project has been to highlight this tense relationship between theatre, eroticisim and the body. I have created a form that resembles a glob of vascular tissue, an organ or a tumor, but have used massive scale and sequined surface texture to introduce ideas of carnival, Las Vegas, disco, ecstasy and excess. Intrigue about issues of control; the desire for it, the loss of it, and the fear of and desire for that loss.
