“Transparency”

Transparency combines newly commissioned projects alongside existing work by two Melbourne based artists, Andrew Hazewinkel and Gosia Wlodarczak. Exploring the potentiality of different materials and the materiality within the gallery, Transparency will activate the space with light, surface and texture. Wlodarczak will draw fragments of her immediate experience directly onto the windows in Gallery 1. This linear abstraction will fill the space with a cathedral like presence as daylight transforms the work between surface and solid. This will be combined with a film installation, The Beam of Light. Hazewinkel will present a trilogy of images framed against the backdrop of black sandpaper, including a large scale screen-print and sculptural works.

Andrew Hazewinkel is a Melbourne based visual artist working across the fields of sculpture, video, photography and installation. His practice involves photo archive based activities exploring an interest in correspondence between photographic and sculptural practices. He is currently a PhD candidate at The University of Sydney. Hazewinkel recently presented new work in CCP Declares: On the Nature of Things, at the Centre for Contemporary Photography, Melbourne and CCP Declares: At the Fair, CCP Project Space at the Melbourne Art Fair.

Gosia Wlodarczak’s cross-disciplinary drawing practice, extends drawing towards performance, interactivity, installation sound and film. Drawing from her immediate environment Wlodarczak traces and re-traces moments in time creating fragmentary linear constructions. Recent projects have include a multi-disciplinary solo show at Western Gallery, Western Washington University, USA, a four-week residency/performance project, Dust & Frost, as part of Sofitel’s Melbourne Artist in Residence program and Window Shopping, Frost Drawing as part of Contemporary Australia: Woman at Queensland Art Gallery/Gallery of Modern Art, Brisbane and 2011 Singapore Biennale: Open House.
