Day and night, light and darkness – this polarity is of fundamental significance in human life and nature generally. Twilight is a time of transition. As day shifts into night, colour begins to drain from all reflective subjects, transforming colour into a grey tonal scale. This exhibition focused on this transition, exploring the colour shift and its implications on our visual, spatial and psychological awareness. The shift from day into night affects our perception of our surroundings, of who we are within these landscapes and how we manoeuvre through them.

In what way do we read into images that have both monochromatic and coloured subjects?

Responding to the curatorial guidelines in their ways, one of this exhibition’s primary concerns is in creating a dialogue between the artists and the aesthetic constraints of the theme. Turning an idea as simple as ‘light and change’ into a larger discussion, Tonal Transition allows the artists to utilise the initially limited aesthetic to expand upon personal metaphors relevant to their work.

The exhibition draws upon the psychology of night, day, monochromatic and colour symbolism. We aim to expand the dialogue of tonality, and the dialogue of our surrounding environment.
