some reading
Spiros Panigirakis
16 Aug → 16 Aug 2012

Please join us to formally launch the West Space’s Reading Room/Workspace through a performance by Spiros Panigirakis entitled some reading.

some reading (2012)
In some reading (2012) a performance is developed as a link to the West Space Reading Room. In this work Panigirakis explores the relationship between a written text and the pieces of furniture produced to store, organise and present West Space’s collection of journals, books and artists’ publications. The reading grapples with how an artwork might deal with difference, function, design and the commissioning process.

The duration of some reading is approximately 50 minutes. Spiros will also be answering questions after the reading performance.

The Reading Room Project
In 2011, as part of our relocation project, West Space commissioned Spiros Panigirakis to create a permanent project that would also function as our Reading Room/Workspace area. We are immensely proud of the resultant installation – Spiros has created a space that is elegant in both its ideas and materiality.

West Space’s new Reading Room area is a much more ambitious version of the West Space bookroom that existed at the old Anthony Street site. The Reading Room is envisaged as an engine room for publishing projects but also a public space where people can come and read books from the West Space library and also view print- and design-based exhibitions. The area is also an important meeting space; many of the discussions important to the running of West Space and its artistic program are held in this environment.

Spiros Panigirakis is an artist based in Melbourne. He is interested in how presentational devices, furniture and organisational frameworks influence the construction of meaning, form and sociability. Panigirakis often works with groups in both a curatorial and collaborative capacity to address the sited conditions of art. When working on an individual basis he alludes to these issues within the content of the work. He has previously worked on the CLUBSproject Inc. committee; written about the art of Fiona Macdonald, Andrew Atchison and Bianca Hester; and exhibited work at the VCA Margaret Lawrence Gallery, RMIT’s Project Space, MUMA and number of artist-run initiatives. Spiros Panigirakis is a lecturer in the faculty of Art Design & Architecture at Monash University and is represented by Sarah Scout, Melbourne.
