Some bits

The bit is the smallest unit of digital logic. Bits exist to signify other things: a yes or a no, existence or absence, a warning, a number, or something more complex. It is the ultimate abstract symbol, infinitely re-assignable, and utterly functional.

And yet, tactile contact tends to promote intimacy. When we play with them, do we ‘make friends’ with them? Can these devices be charming, annoying, or funny? What does the bit signify now, be it on or off?

Jonathan Luker has been working with digital media, simulations and electronic devices since 1995.
