Sicks’& sevens

19 Oct → 10 Nov 2012

Sicks’& sevens seeks to reinvent and glorify iconic objects from the lost days of my childhood, where Back to the Future, the Bones Brigade, He-man and Hulk Hogan starred. It attempts to balance the sharp sting of nostalgia for this lost world with a certain amount of neo-punk/kitsch humour. Combining print media with ready-made and cast objects, remixing highbrow materials with ad-hoc methods, Sicks’& sevens uses scale, memory, slapstick and the futurities of the past, to make comment on notions of failure, the derivative nature of novelty and the ironic derogation of retro.

This project would not be possible without the generous support of the Australia Council for the Arts New Work Grant for Emerging Artists.

In 2010 Dolman received a Bachelor of Fine Art (printmaking) with first class Honours from the Victorian College of Arts. He was the recipient of the 2009 Wallara Travelling Scholarship and 2011 received a New Work Grant (emerging) from the Australia Council for the Arts. He has been a finalist in the Brett Whiteley Travelling Scolarship, Art on Paper prize Hazelhurst Regional Gallery, Port Jackson Press Print Award and AAA Art Prize among others. Recent solo shows include: Arrange /rearrange/deranged MARS Gallery, superegular Seventh Gallery, I Jumps Sawtooth (upcoming) Untilted Inflight (upcoming).
