I come to painting with a perspective that is coloured by the experience of operating in a post-medium condition. Yet, I feel that as a method of working, painting still offers the potential for a reflexive and automatic way of making art. My process is influenced by the way that irresolution, error and contradiction might be used as constructive elements in a kind of polished amateurism that eschews skill, labour and beauty as qualitative entities. I am interested in re-using abstract painting's now demystified and devalued strategies and styles as a way of exploring new compositional forms where allusions to the transgressive and the unseen play out in tandem with the commodified, the contrived, the generic and the everyday. Seeking different ends by the same means.
