Recent Paintings PJ Hickman mainly sources art materials from hardware stores like Bunnings and Mitre10. Using 'ready to make' DIY products, Recent Paintings continue an ongoing investigation of painting as a pursuit of its 'zero degree'.
There is a touch of irony and humour about the work, for although the title of the exhibition and text on the work emphatically states RECENT PAINTINGS, the work is arguably neither 'recent' nor 'painting'. Rather the work is about painting as it appropriates the historical attributes of painting's 'zero degree' including the grid, monochrome, stripe and support, and combines and synthesises these with three-dimensional attributes including the cube and Minimalist primary structures. This dismemberment of painting leads to something more sculptural or 'real', verging on the serial production of standardised industrial objects. PJ Hickman is a Brisbane based artist and has exhibited in Brisbane, Canberra and Melbourne.
