Performing Absence
Danica Chappell, Ross Coulter and Clare Rae
27 June → 26 July 2014

Performing Absence brings together three Melbourne image-based artists whose re-appropriation of photographic techniques interrogates ideas around community, identity and process. The exhibition explores Danica Chappell, Ross Coulter and Clare Rae’s exploitation of visual illusion, the performative element of each of these works is not as it seems. It is the absence of traditional live performance in each of the works that illuminates the photographers’ presence, process and intent. Process is the performance and the photographer the performer. We see the artists’ presence as creators at each step of the process, their gestures recorded in every dust spot, scratch, kink and curl of the paper; the performance not so absent after all.
