NOTHING (but flowers)
Benedict Ernst
26 Aug → 17 Sept 2011

I guess all I really want to say is I’m sorry. It’s kind of a personal thing. I really am sorry and despite all that I know all this aint going to make any kinda difference to anything. But that doesn’t mean I am not sorry. In fact I am sorry about that too. Maybe its really more like an expression of regret and that can be broader and kinda cultural and age specific and stuff as well as personal. Or maybe instead of personal – something outside that gets inside. I’m sorry it’s not as clear as I would like – that edge of ownership of emotions and perception. It’s a strange landscape.
I dunno. But I hope you like the flowers.

NOTHING (but flowers) is an exhibition of recent sculpture based on bouquets and botanical studies collated from found objects and collected detritus.

Benedict Ernst is a sculptor and installation artist whose recent work takes a tough and urban approach to botanical study. Influenced by Dutch still life painting and Japanese Ikebana Ernst’s work reflects the struggle to live with hope in the face of contemporary environmental foreboding. He has exhibited widely in Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane and Perth and in 2011 commenced a Master of Fine Arts by research at Monash University.
