Always is a new work that contemplates and leans into loss by taking comfort in careful arrangements of past and recent work. Always reflects on the tensions between the accumulation of time and the importance of remembering. Sculptural and photographic, the work is comprised of framed digital prints supported by sculptural structures made from glass bricks. Through these materials, artist Mashara Wachjudy explores the architectural nature of memory and time.

This project is presented in partnership with PHOTO2021 and supported by the City of Yarra.

The West Space window space is an illuminated double-paned vertical window situated outdoors with an exposed brick wall and grey-tiled floor. The photograph of the exhibition space is from a slanted angle and shows the doors of an adjacent gallery. The top panel shows a small single photograph with a glass brick next to it. The bottom panel displays a large gold-framed photograph showing an arched doorway with an orange curtain. The photograph has several glass bricks arranged on either side. Two small photographs are positioned to the right above the large photograph.

Mashara Wachjudy’s practice is a consideration of memory and cross-cultural experience. Documenting places lived and passed through, Mashara’s work observes the physical and emotional relationships we have with landscape and place.
