Chateau Fatale’ continues Kate Rohde’s exploration of the often strange way humans relate to nature. Using an extensive range of craft and hardware materials, including silicone, expanding foam, fake fur and rice paper, she will transform the gallery into a room reminiscent of a European palace.

Inspired by the aesthetic of such locations as Chateau Versailles and The Vienna Natural History Museum, the room will house a collection of zoological, botanical and geological specimens made by the artist, which rather than factually representing natural history, take a more playful, decorative approach.

Kate Rohde is a Melbourne based artist and has exhibited in Melbourne, Sydney, Canberra and Perth since graduating from the Victorian College of the Arts in 2001. ‘Chateau Fatale’ will be her first Melbourne solo show since 2002. She is represented by Kaliman Gallery in Sydney and Johnston Gallery in Perth.

This project has been supported by the Australia Council for the Arts.
