“It's easy to make things bigger and more complicated”

A sunset is an event defined by its repetition, its ordinariness, its brevity and perhaps its preciousness. It’s easy to make things bigger and more complicated is a painting experiment exploring what happens to an image of a sunset when it is manipulated past the point of control. Drawing on ideas of art as excess and the intensification of experience through the act of making, the walls of the backspace will be used as a site to work and re-work the image until it either strains, transforms or breaks down completely. The work aims to pass by resolution again and again in an attempt to open a space for something else to happen — something unplanned, unexpected and possibly quite ordinary.

Sharon Billinge is an English born Melbourne based artist. Billinge is a current recipient of the Australian Postgraduate Award scholarship for her Masters research at the Victorian College of the Arts and was recently awarded the KPMG tutorship award in 2009. She has exhibited widely across Australia including recent solo shows at The Centre for Contemporary Photography and the Linden Centre for Contemporary Arts in Melbourne. Her work has been included in a number of high profile competitions including The Silkcut Award, The Bangkok Triennial and the City of Perth Art Award. Billinge recently returned from a residency in Liverpool, England and has held residencies at The Arthur Boyd Trust property in NSW and the Nilumbikshire Laughing Waters Artists program in Victoria.
