Interior Motive

Interior Motive is a filmed reconstruction of a family separation, with a cast who is never actually seen. All that remains are personal spaces, impressions, possessions and hints of interaction. Significant moments are often tied to particular locations – visions of these places can trigger, or even create, emotional memories of the events themselves.

Shot on 16mm film, the detailed portraits are projected simultaneously on three walls. Natural sounds and movements reveal signs of life. Even though the occupants have left, they could return at any time to continue the story.

Kate Russell graduated from the VCA Film School in 1998 and now works as an art director in the film and television industry. Interior Motive is her first film installation and was completed in collaboration with cinematographers Marcus Dineen and Paul Williams with sound designer Bart Bee.
