Incident
Jan Murray
20 June → 12 July 2008

Incident investigates Murray’s ongoing interest in the internal and external architecture of ‘painting’ through the installation of a single trompe l’oeil painting, in which the canvas appears to have been gutted – cut open in a surgical dissection. Incident explores the space between the surface of the canvas and the wall and its physical properties as well as tests the literal and metaphysical ‘limits’ of painting as object and illusionistic vehicle. This project is a development from previous work in which the paradoxes of perception and representation inherent in both looking and painting were acutely focused and examines the complex relationship between the creative and destructive action.

Since 1982 Jan Murray has exhibited regularly in both solo and group exhibitions in public museums, commercial galleries and artist run initiatives. Her work has been included in national and international surveys of contemporary art in Australia, Germany, France and the USA. She is currently Acting Head of VCA Art and is represented by Charles Nodrum Gallery, Melbourne.
