Idiot as an Artist (Don't Know Don't Care Mate)
Jordan Marani
18 Oct → 16 Nov 2013

Jordan Marani makes darkly humourous work involving personal narratives, cynical observations of the human condition and an exploration of loss and the past. Through painting and sculpture employing bright colour, humour and word play, he explores the funny side of the dark side. At West Space Jordan will be using junk food, beer and comfort wear as the inspiration and source materials for a body of work exploring memories of being a high school student in Oakleigh.

Potato cake, potato cake, fryer’s man.
Fry my potato cake as fast as you can,
Fry it up, Fry it up,
Put it in my hand
And toss in a battered sav as fast as you can!

In his childhood Jordan Marani’s parents were the proprietors of The Hi-Way Snack Bar in Clayton North. He attended Oakleigh High School and his first job was at the Notting Hill Hotel, before he attended Prahran Technical College.

From 2008-2011 Jordan was co-founder and co-director of Hell Gallery. His work has been exhibited at Tate Modern, the National Gallery of Victoria, Static Gallery Liverpool, Switchback Gallery, 200 Gertrude Street, Daine Singer, Neon Parc, Utopian Slumps, Ryan Renshaw, and at ARIs including Death Be Kind, Inflight, Seventh, and West Space.
