In May 2001, Serbian-born Bobby Despotovski caused controversy in a match against Melbourne Croatia while playing for Perth Glory in the now defunct National Soccer League. In the 1991 AFL Grand Final, Dermot Brereton sporting Hawthorn Hawks regalia racially vilified Sydney Swan’s Chris Lewis.

The word ‘logo’ (from logotype) is a graphic representation of a company name, uniquely designed for recognition. The etymology of logotype is from the Greek word Logos: a philosophical term referring to the rational principle that governs and develops the universe as well as referring to, in theology, the divine work of reason incarnate in Jesus Christ himself. John 1:1-14.

On a jersey, the logo sits on the chest of a player like an oath. It is known to be somewhat elastic—stretching and transforming as players and club evolve through participation. It’s not until the logo as Logos is actively subverted by the whims of the playing body that all hell breaks loose. When such events occur, the logo as Logos must be replaced immediately with another. Then the game can continue.
