In November 2003, 2200 tiles featuring Australian endangered butterflies were broken as part of my exhibition, Fumie-Tiles, held at CSIRO Discovery Canberra. The fumie-butterfly mandala is composed of broken pieces from these tiles. The butterfly pictures featured in the mandala form the ghosts of the destroyed tiles, sacrificed by human’s impact on nature, and a gateway to the spiritual world.
