Fragile Structures
Susan Andrews, Bronwen Bassett and Isobel Johnston
25 Mar → 9 Apr 2005

Three artists explore in the natural world and the inference that all living organisms are interconnected by structure, pattern and space.

The elemental themes of Water, Land and Honey tie the work of these artists to subtleties at the heart of our perception of the physical world. The juxtaposition of themes draws attention to material and symbol, to physical and imaginary space.

Susan Andrews explores the space between the scientific image and the painted image. She focuses on phytoplankton and various species of diatoms that inhabit rivers and oceans.

Bronwen Bassett’s landscapes start as direct rubbings from objects in nature (rock, tree). The finished works are as renderings of imaginative speculation as they are of the sparseness & density and the richness of the physical world.

Isobel Johnston has been working with science-based images for a number of years. This new work is a development of her practice which brings together art and science.
