ffiXXed: Surviving sustainability: __________
ffiXXed, Sibling Architecture, Condiment magazine, World Food Books, Y3K and James Deutsher
1 July → 24 July 2010

Incorporating State of Design (16–24 July) and Melbourne Central’s Two Blocks Festival (19 July – 1 August)

As part of this year’s State of Design festival ffiXXed presented Surviving sustainability:______________ a project that brought together a range of responses to the often problematic notion of sustainable lifestyle. The project took place between ffiXXed studios Shenzhen, Y3K gallery in Fitzroy and the West Wing space, with a third component that took place later at Kapok gallery in Hong Kong.

The West Wing operated as a multifunctional ffiXXed office/ studio/ showroom/ workshop through which a curated group of Melbourne-based creative practitioners worked. Over the course of the project Sibling architecture worked together with Condiment magazine in the space to build a self-contained kitchen utilising sustainable design elements. World Food Books, a mobile retail space specializing in new and previously unavailable contemporary art journals, editions and periodicals with a focus on contemporary global dialogue, will be present. The space itself was transformed through an experimental interior design collaboration between ffiXXed and James Deutsher. The space was also open to more spontaneous activities and events.

ffiXXed is a collaborative art and design project initiated by Australian artists/designers Kain Picken and Fiona Lau. Together they produce a bi-seasonal prêt a porter fashion label, as well as participating in art and design exhibitions, curatorial projects and other collaborative activities. They have worked between studio spaces in Berlin, Hong Kong, New York and are currently based in Shenzhen, China, where they have recently established an in-house production studio.
