A Festival of site specific sound art at Bogong Village—

The Bogong AIR Festival is another project in West Space’s Tomorrow the World series, a program supporting experimental audiovisual, sound and performance projects.

The Bogong AIR Festival comprises site specific interventions by Slavek Kwi, Natasha Anderson, Jim Denley, Rosalind Hall, Alice Hui-Sheng Chang and Dianne Peacock who will be undertaking a five-day residency in the lead up to the festival in order to develop performance projects that respond to the acoustic and spatial dynamics of Bogong Alpine Village. Outcomes of their investigations will be presented at various locations throughout the village on February 19 and 20. In addition to the live performances, Philip Samartzis will present his newest 7.1 surround sound installation Crush Grind comprising his Antarctic fieldwork into extreme climate and weather events, whilst Eric La Casa has composed a special soundscape work for headphone playback on Lake Guy. The performance and listening program was supplemented by artist talks and an evening social event that encouraged interaction between artists and audience.

Description: Bogong Alpine Village is 325 kilometres North-East of Melbourne situated at an altitude of 800 meters in the Alpine National Park between Mount Beauty and Falls Creek.

The village was established in the late 1930s to service the first hydroelectric scheme in Australia, whilst more recently it has become a centre for alpine sports, recreation and ecotourism. Attracted to the pristine wilderness and remote location, Philip Samartzis and Madelynne Cornish have settled at the village in order to facilitate cultural initiatives that actively engage with the history and ecology of the village and its environs. The Bogong AIR Festival is the first project in this series.
