Because Magic
Leanne Hermosilla
2 Oct → 7 Nov 2015

Through multimodal practice Leanne Hermosilla explores the doctrines, tools and practices of marginalised and alternative knowledge as a methodological framework for art making. Her research has spanned facets of psi phenomena, alternative therapies, spiritual practices, pagan rituals and divining practices. The "othering" of these ideas and activities to those of science has led to a consideration of the boundaries between science and "pseudo-science" in recent work.

Because Magic shifts the focus away from this boundary and toward the territory of the magical. Hermosilla investigates a series of processes rooted in esoteric philosophies in order to consider alternative concepts of causality. New works are facilitated through the use of esoteric tools and instruments, and are enacted and documented utilising strategies and considerations embedded in both marginalised epistemologies and contemporary art practice.

This project is supported by the Victorian Government through Creative Victoria.

Leanne Hermosilla graduated with a Bachelor of Fine Art from Elam School of Fine Art at the University of Auckland, NZ, in 2007 and Master of Visual Art, from the Victorian College of the Arts at the University of Melbourne in 2011. She is currently continuing her research at the VCA as a Ph.D. candidate.
