A Flag and a Flagpole

The project A flag and a flagpole continues an investigation into war theorist Herfried Munkler’s concept of a post-heroic society. Munkler’s post-heroic is a bottom-up transformation fueled by shared power and community building, where leaders must learn to change the nature of power and how it is employed.

The exhibition consists of four flags and flagpoles which have been assembled quickly yet delicately using the simple means of found materials, paint and glue. Each work translates into a flag and flagpole using the specific material quality of what is found and what is free in a particular space and time.

A flag and a flagpole will also be presented at High Street Project, Christchurch, New Zealand later this year. The work is always made in and from each location.

Nicki Wynnychuk recently completed a Master of Visual Arts (first class) at the Victorian College of Arts and is a recipient of a Gertrude Contemporary Art Spaces residency for 2009–2010.
