A Barn for a Goddess and Other Journeys
Emma van Leest
5 May → 20 May 2006

Emma van Leest will be exhibiting paper cuttings resulting from research during recent travels in Indonesia and China. She employs this methodical craft tradition as a means of story telling and exploration of fantasy. In this exhibition she weaves a tale of romance, conflict and intrigue with influences from Chinese comic books, Javanese shadow puppets, photographs, theatre sets as well as medieval illustration and her own drawing.

Goddesses and knights dance, play, fight and make romance on an other-worldly stage filled with oversized houseplants and fairytale pagodas and castles as miniature deer, goats and horses look on.

Emma van Leest is a Melbourne-based artist who graduated from RMIT Fine Art (Painting) with Honours in 2000. She was recently awarded an Australia Council New Work Grant to produce work after travels to Indonesia and China.
