Interview with
Wiebke Brix on the occasion of Borderline, her 2007 exhibition at West Space. Questions by Steven Rendall, West Space Public Program Coordinator.
Steven Rendall: Can you tell us something about your influences? Are there any artists, writers, musicians etc. in particular that are important to you and in what ways they have influenced your practice? Wiebke Brix: There are numerous artists whose work I admire like Do Ho-Suh and Ernesto Neto just to mention two. But my biggest inspiration has been the fact that I migrated to Australia. Being out of my “comfort” zone and having to adapt to a new language and culture has been very intense and inspiring. SR: What were the particular approaches and/or processes that you used to make the work you are exhibiting at West Space. For example were there ways that you extended your practice in realising this work? WB: My recent work has been a combination of a sculptural and photographic approach. My most recent work for West Space was a purely sculptural work and interactive, I loved the fact that there was an interactive side to it, something I couldn’t achieve with my photos. So yes I did extend my practice and will continue to do so. It was a very important piece for me. SR: Why did you want to become an artist? WB: I didn’t plan to, it just happened. I have a very strong crafts background. I found then better I new my material- porcelain -then less experimental I became. Working with ceramics was very limiting in many ways and I felt I wanted to concentrate on content rather then form. SR: Have you been to any exhibitions recently that you had a strong response to? Could you tell us about it? WB: I really liked Anastasia Klose’s work in the last NEW show at ACCA. The work was not pretentious or artificial, just very honest. I also really liked the Rules of Engagement show at West Space. It is good to see artists being critical about themselves and the “art world”. SR: Are there any projects or exhibitions that you are currently working on? Where and when can people see your work next? WB: I have one work in the DLAP art prize; the show opens Thursday August 9th 6pm and is on until the 9th of September. (Bundoora Homestead Art Centre, 7-27 Snake Gully Drive, Bundoora) And I have a solo show coming up at Linden the opening is on the 16th of August and the show is on until the 23rd of September. It is an interactive installation dealing once again with exilic views of home…now I have to go back to work to make it happen on time. (Linden - St Kilda Centre for Contemporary Arts, 26 Acland Street St Kilda Vic 3182) Link to Borderline, an exhibition at West Space, 22 June - 14 July 2007. |
